Irish passport holders can visit Hungary for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This has been the case since Hungary joined the Schengen Area, and it remains unchanged in 2026. You just need a valid passport and a few basic documents to show at border control.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Irish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Hungary. Since Hungary is in the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all 29 Schengen countries — not just Hungary.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen zone
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen area within 90 days. Airlines check this before boarding too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a host's address ready. Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
You may need to show you have enough money for your stay — roughly €100 per day is a safe benchmark. A bank statement or credit card usually satisfies this if asked.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Hungary. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel — even if you're only staying a week.
90-day clock resets after 180 days
The 90-day visa-free stay is calculated over any 180-day period. You cannot simply leave for a day and come back — you must stay out of the Schengen Area for 90 full days.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or save your return ticket, hotel booking, and insurance. Keep them in your carry-on, not checked luggage.
2
Arrive at Budapest Airport or another Schengen entry point
You'll go through passport control. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, where you're staying, and when you leave. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This starts your 90-day clock. Check the stamp before walking away — if it's missing or wrong, ask for correction immediately.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, pick up your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. No further formalities for Irish passport holders.
