Irish passport holders can enter Kyrgyzstan without a visa for stays up to 60 days. This has been the case since 2017 and there are no signs of it changing. Just show up at Manas International Airport in Bishkek with your passport and you'll be stamped in.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in Kyrgyzstan. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kyrgyzstan
Immigration officers at Manas International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Kyrgyzstan. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
You may be asked to show you have enough cash or card funds for your trip. A bank statement or credit card with a reasonable limit works fine.Recommended
Overstaying is not worth it
If you overstay your 60 days, you'll be fined and potentially banned from re-entering for a period. The fine is usually around 1,000–5,000 KGS (€10–€50), but the hassle and risk of a ban aren't worth it. Set a reminder to leave on time.
SIM cards at the airport
At Manas Airport, you can buy a local SIM from operators like MegaCom or Beeline. They have kiosks in the arrivals hall. Prices start around 200 KGS (€2) for a basic data package. If you prefer eSIM, Airalo works immediately on landing.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Manas International Airport (Bishkek)
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are usually two queues: one for Kyrgyz citizens and one for foreigners. Join the foreigner queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where you're going. Answer briefly and honestly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation booking.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the maximum stay allowed (60 days). Check the stamp before walking away. If the date looks wrong, ask politely for a correction.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, go to baggage claim, then customs. Unless you're carrying large amounts of cash or restricted goods, you'll walk straight through the green channel.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave the country (e.g., a quick trip to Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan) and re-enter to get a new 60-day period. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban.
For stays under 60 days, no registration is required. If you somehow end up staying longer (which isn't allowed without a visa), you would need to register. But since you can't extend, this doesn't apply to most Irish travellers.
Yes. The same visa-free rules apply at land borders. However, border crossings can be slow and chaotic. The main crossings are Dostyk (from Kazakhstan) and Dustlik (from Uzbekistan). Have your passport and any vehicle documents ready.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before travelling.
No. There is no visa on arrival for Irish citizens. The only option is to leave and re-enter, or apply for a visa in advance at a Kyrgyz embassy (e.g., in London) if you know you'll need more than 60 days.
No mandatory vaccinations for Irish travellers. However, routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus, hepatitis A) are recommended. Check with a travel health clinic 4-6 weeks before departure.
The local currency is the Kyrgyzstani som (KGS). ATMs are widely available in Bishkek and major towns, but less so in rural areas. Bring some US dollars or euros as backup — they can be exchanged at banks and exchange offices.
