Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Irish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Liechtenstein. Since Liechtenstein is in the Schengen zone, you get 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen countries — not just Liechtenstein. Airlines at Dublin or other EU hubs rarely check passport validity beyond the stay dates, but border officers in Schengen do.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at the Swiss or Austrian border crossing into Liechtenstein (there's no airport) may ask for proof of onward travel. Have a return ticket to Ireland or a ticket to a non-Schengen country ready. Budget airlines flying out of Zurich or Memmingen sometimes check this at check-in too.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Liechtenstein border officers occasionally ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive by car from Switzerland or Austria. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend in Liechtenstein covers this. No one expects a full itinerary, just a first-night address.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Schengen rules say you need about €100 per day of stay, but Liechtenstein rarely enforces this for Irish passport holders. If asked, a bank statement or credit card showing available credit works. I've never seen anyone turned away for lack of cash in Vaduz.Recommended
Schengen 90-day rule
Your 90-day allowance applies across all Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you have 60 days left for Liechtenstein and the rest of Schengen. Track your days with the Schengen calculator app.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you enter Liechtenstein, not your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Schengen border
You'll enter Liechtenstein via a Schengen external border — usually at Zurich Airport (Switzerland) or by land from Austria. At passport control, join the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and be ready to show your return ticket and accommodation booking if asked.
2
Get your passport stamped
The officer will check your passport, verify your identity, and stamp it with the entry date. This stamp proves you entered legally and starts your 90-day clock. Keep the stamp visible — don't cover it.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then walk through customs. Liechtenstein uses Swiss customs rules — no routine checks for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.
4
Travel to Liechtenstein
From Zurich Airport, take a train to Sargans (about 1 hour), then a bus to Vaduz (15 minutes). From Austria, drive or take a bus. No internal border checks within Schengen.
