Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay
Your Irish passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Mauritius. Immigration officers at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport check this at the counter — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding in Dublin or London.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Mauritius immigration routinely asks for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. Airlines check this before you board in Europe.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration officers may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation, resort booking, or a letter from a host with their address and contact number. This is not always checked, but having it avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Officers can ask to see evidence you can support yourself. Carry a bank statement, credit card, or cash — around 3,000–5,000 MUR per day is a safe benchmark. I have never been asked for this entering Mauritius, but the law allows them to.Recommended
No visa, no forms — just show up
Irish passport holders get 90 days visa-free on arrival. No application, no fee, no forms to fill. Just your passport and a return ticket.
Passport validity is strict
Your passport must be valid for 6 months from the day you land. Airlines check this at check-in. If you're even a day short, you won't board.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU)
You'll land at the main airport near Port Louis. Follow signs to 'Immigration' — it's a single queue for all non-citizens.
2
Present your passport and ticket
Hand over your passport and return/onward ticket. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in. No forms to fill.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare, red if you do.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type before your 90 days are up, or leave and re-enter (though re-entry isn't guaranteed).
No. Irish passport holders can transit without a visa as long as you stay airside and don't pass through immigration. If you need to leave the airport, you'll need the standard visa-free entry (up to 90 days).
You'll be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6 months are counted from your date of entry into Mauritius.
No. There's no official requirement to show bank statements or cash. But if you look like you might overstay or work illegally, an officer could ask. Having a credit card and a return ticket is usually enough.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism only. Working remotely for a foreign employer is technically not allowed. If you want to work remotely, look into the Mauritius Premium Visa (valid for 1 year).
The currency is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR). ATMs are widely available at the airport and in towns. Cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants, but smaller shops and taxis prefer cash. Bring some euros or dollars to exchange if you want.
No mandatory vaccinations for Irish travellers. But check routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus) are up to date. Yellow fever vaccine is required only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk.
