Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Irish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Senegal. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Senegal
Immigration officers at Dakar Blaise Diagne Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready — they won't let you through without one.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number is enough. Keep it on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration may ask how much cash or credit you're carrying. Have a bank statement or credit card ready — there's no set minimum, but showing you have enough for your stay avoids delays.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccine may be required
If you've recently traveled to a country with yellow fever (e.g., Nigeria, Ghana, Brazil), you must carry a valid yellow fever certificate. Airlines may check this before boarding.
No overstay tolerance
Overstaying your 90-day visa-free period can result in fines, detention, or a ban from re-entering Senegal. Set a calendar reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Print or save digital copies of your passport, return ticket, and first night's accommodation. Keep them in a separate bag from your passport.
2
Arrive at Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS)
Most flights from Ireland arrive at Dakar's new airport. Follow signs to 'Passport Control' — it's a single queue for all non-Senegalese.
3
Present your passport and boarding pass
Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer will check your passport validity and may ask for your return ticket. Answer clearly: 'Tourism' or 'Visiting friends'.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with a 90-day visa-free entry. No fee, no form. The whole process takes 2–5 minutes if the queue is short.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim. Then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel unless you have goods to declare.
