Icelandic passport holders can enter Costa Rica without a visa for stays up to 180 days. This policy started in 2024 and continues through 2026. You need a valid passport and a few basics ready at immigration.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Costa Rica. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration officers at San José (SJO) will deny boarding if it expires before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration at SJO asks for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Budget airlines like Volaris and Copa enforce this strictly at check-in — have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host covers this — no need to book refundable unless you want to.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Costa Rica doesn't publish a fixed amount, but carrying a credit card and a bank statement showing at least $500–$1,000 USD helps. I've never been asked, but solo travelers or long-stay visitors sometimes get checked.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Costa Rica immigration checks your passport's expiration date against your arrival date. If it's less than 6 months away, you will be denied entry. No exceptions. Check your passport now.
Keep a digital copy of your documents
Save photos of your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation on your phone or in cloud storage. If you lose your passport, this makes replacement much faster.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months), save a screenshot of your return ticket and first night's accommodation, and consider getting travel insurance. Also grab an eSIM or local SIM so you have data on arrival.
2
Arrive at San José or Liberia airport
You'll land at Juan Santamaría International (SJO) near San José or Daniel Oduber Quirós (LIR) in Liberia. Follow signs to 'Migración' or 'Extranjeros'.
3
Queue at immigration
Join the line for foreign visitors. Have your passport, return ticket (on phone or printed), and accommodation details ready. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where you're headed.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a date up to 180 days. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the allowed stay is correct.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from baggage claim, then walk through customs (usually green/nothing to declare). You're in.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave before the 180 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type before your 180 days expire.
You'll be denied entry. Costa Rica strictly requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. If it's close, renew your passport before traveling.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (like Brazil, Colombia, or parts of Africa). Iceland is not a risk country, so no vaccine is needed for direct travel. If you've recently been in a risk area, bring your yellow fever certificate.
Technically, the tourist visa does not permit work. However, Costa Rica has a 'Rentista' visa for remote workers and digital nomads. For short stays, many people work remotely without issues, but it's a grey area. For longer stays, apply for the official digital nomad visa.
Contact the Icelandic Embassy in Washington D.C. (which covers Costa Rica) or the nearest consulate. They can issue an emergency travel document. Also file a police report locally. Keep a photocopy or digital scan of your passport separately.
Yes, but it's usually included in your airline ticket. If not, you'll pay around $29 USD at the airport. Check your ticket details — most major airlines include it.
It's risky. Immigration may ask for proof of onward travel. A return or onward ticket is strongly recommended. If you don't have one, you might be denied boarding or entry. Book a refundable onward ticket if you're unsure of your plans.
