Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Icelandic passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in Hong Kong. No 6-month validity rule applies here. Airlines sometimes check for 6 months — if your passport expires soon, carry proof of your onward travel to avoid boarding issues.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Hong Kong. A flight booking to mainland China, Macau, or any other destination works. Without one, you risk being denied entry at the airport.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel confirmation for your entire stay. If staying with friends, have their Hong Kong ID number and address handy. Immigration rarely asks, but when they do, they want specifics.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. No fixed amount is published, but around 3,000 HKD per day is a safe benchmark. Officers rarely check this for Icelandic passport holders, but better to have it than scramble at the counter.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Hong Kong, not from your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
Overstaying is serious
Overstaying your 90-day visa-free period can lead to fines, detention, and a ban from re-entering Hong Kong. If you need more time, apply for a visa before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport is valid for 6+ months from your entry date and has at least 1 blank page. Book your return or onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save digital copies of everything on your phone.
2
Fill out the arrival card on the plane
You'll receive a small arrival/departure card during your flight. Fill it out in black or blue ink. You'll need your flight number, passport details, and the address of where you're staying.
3
Go through immigration at Hong Kong International Airport
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, completed arrival card, and return ticket ready. The officer will check your documents, take a fingerprint scan (usually index fingers), and stamp your passport. The whole process takes 5–15 minutes.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually green channel for most travellers. You're allowed 1 litre of alcohol and 200 cigarettes duty-free.
