Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Hungary
Your passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Hungary. Schengen rules don't require 6 months beyond departure, but your airline might ask for it — check with them before you fly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen zone
Border officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they want to see you'll leave the Schengen area within 90 days.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, you'll need to show where you're staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready. Hungary doesn't publish a fixed amount, but around 10,000 HUF per day (about €25) is a safe benchmark if asked.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding, and border guards check it on arrival. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be turned away.
90-day Schengen rule applies across all member countries
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen Area, not just Hungary. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries (e.g., Germany, Italy, Spain), that time counts toward your 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator online to track your days.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at Budapest Airport
At Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' or 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
3
Present documents to border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer honestly. They may also ask to see your return ticket and accommodation proof.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp starts your 90-day Schengen clock. Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Hungary.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen Area, not just Hungary. So if you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for Hungary and other Schengen countries combined.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa (type D) or a residence permit before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or a ban from Schengen.
No, for stays under 90 days, there is no registration requirement. If you stay longer (with a visa or permit), you must register your address with the local immigration office within 3 days of arrival.
You will likely be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry at the border. Always renew your passport if it has less than 6 months validity remaining before your trip.
No, the visa-free regime does not permit any work, including remote work for a foreign employer. For digital nomads, Hungary offers a 'White Card' (digital nomad visa) that allows you to live and work remotely for up to one year.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may face a fine (typically €50-€300), a formal warning, or a re-entry ban depending on how long you overstayed. In serious cases, you could be banned from the Schengen Area for up to 5 years.
No, as an Icelandic passport holder, you can transit through Hungary without a visa, even if you're staying in the airport transit zone. This applies to all Schengen airports.
