Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay in Mexico
Your Icelandic passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Mexico. Immigration officers at Mexico City and Cancún airports check this — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding by the airline.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration at Mexico City, Cancún, and other airports routinely asks for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from a host handy. Officers at Cancún and Mexico City sometimes ask where you are staying — having a printed booking saves time.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a credit card or a bank statement showing you have enough money for your trip. Immigration rarely asks for this, but if they do, they want to see you are not planning to work illegally.Recommended
Keep your FMM form safe
When you enter Mexico, you'll receive a stamped immigration form (FMM). You must keep the bottom portion and return it when you leave. Losing it can cause delays and a small fine at departure.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines and immigration officers will check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you book flights.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Mexican immigration
At the airport, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Join the queue for foreign visitors. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer clearly and honestly. They will stamp your passport with your allowed stay (usually 180 days).
3
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim. Then proceed to customs — you may be asked to press a button on a traffic light system. Green means no inspection; red means a bag check.
4
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you are free to leave. Keep your passport and any stamped documents safe — you will need them when departing Mexico.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is a maximum of 180 days. Extensions are not available for this category. If you want to stay longer, you would need to leave Mexico and re-enter after a period, or apply for a different visa type (like a temporary resident visa) before traveling.
No, there is no mandatory online pre-registration for Icelandic passport holders. You will fill out a paper immigration form (FMM) on the plane or at immigration upon arrival. Keep the bottom portion — you must return it when you leave Mexico.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Mexican immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
Technically, the tourist visa does not permit any form of work, including remote work for a foreign employer. However, enforcement is rare for short stays. If you plan to work remotely for more than a few weeks, consider applying for Mexico's 'Temporary Resident Visa' or 'Digital Nomad Visa' (if introduced) before traveling.
No, if you are transiting through a Mexican airport and staying in the international transit area, you do not need a visa. However, if you need to leave the airport or stay overnight, you will need to clear immigration under the visa-free rules.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering Mexico for a period, or both. The fine is calculated per day overstayed. Always leave before your stamped date expires.
Yes, the same visa-free rules apply at land borders. You will still need a valid passport (6+ months) and may be asked for proof of onward travel. The process is similar to airports — you fill out an FMM form and get a stamp.
