Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in Slovakia
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Slovakia. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — not just Slovakia. Airlines check this at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Slovak border crossings routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines often check this before boarding too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact number. I've been asked for this at Bratislava airport before.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Officers can request proof you have enough money for your trip — roughly €56 per day of stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works. They rarely ask, but I've seen it happen at land borders.Recommended
Passport validity is strict
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Slovakia. If it's close to expiring, renew it before booking flights. Border officers enforce this rule.
Schengen Area rules apply
Slovakia is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all 27 Schengen countries. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at a Schengen entry point
You'll enter Slovakia through Bratislava Airport, Vienna Airport (common for travellers), or a land border from another Schengen country. At passport control, join the 'Non-EU' queue.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer clearly and briefly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
3
Collect your luggage and proceed
After the stamp, you're free to enter. No additional forms or fees. Head to baggage claim and then customs.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen rule. Count your days carefully — overstaying can lead to fines or a ban.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits. If you want to work, you need a work permit and a long-stay visa. Apply at the Slovak embassy in Iceland.
If you stay in a hotel, they handle the registration for you. If you stay in a private home, you must register with the local Foreign Police office within 3 working days. Your host can help.
Renew it before you travel. Immigration may deny entry if your passport has less than 6 months validity left. It's a hard rule.
Generally no for tourism. Extensions are only granted for emergencies (e.g., medical reasons). You'd need to leave the Schengen Area and re-enter after 90 days outside.
Not legally required, but strongly recommended. If you're hospitalized without insurance, you'll pay out of pocket. A basic policy costs around €20–50 for a short trip.
Your passport (or a copy) and proof of insurance. Police can ask for ID. Keep the original passport in a hotel safe and carry a photocopy.
