Hungary entry requirements for Italy passport holders
Italian passport holders can enter Hungary without a visa for short stays. You may travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This has been the case since 2026.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Valid passport Must be valid for the duration of your stay | Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Hungary. Since Hungary is part of the Schengen zone, you can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen countries — not per country. Airlines at check-in will verify your passport validity matches your travel dates. | Required |
| Return or onward ticket Proof of departure from the Schengen zone | Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen area within your 90-day visa-free window. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air also check this at check-in. Have a printed or digital copy ready. | Required |
| Proof of accommodation Hotel booking or host invitation | Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a signed letter from a host with their address is enough. I've been asked for this at Budapest Airport twice in the last year. | Recommended |
| Proof of funds Show you can support yourself during your stay | Hungarian law requires you to prove you have enough money for your trip — roughly 10,000 HUF (about €25) per day. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit works. I've never been asked for this personally, but it's in the regulations. | Recommended |
