Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for an eVisa at the official São Tomé and Príncipe eVisa portal. Processing takes 3–5 business days. Print the approval email and carry it with your passport to immigration.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from São Tomé and Príncipe. Have at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward flight ticket. Airlines check this before boarding. Have a printed copy or digital booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in São Tomé and Príncipe. Immigration may ask for it, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough funds for your stay. Officers rarely ask, but it helps if you look underprepared. Around $100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
eVisa is mandatory — no exceptions
You cannot get a visa on arrival or at the embassy. The only way is the online eVisa. Apply well in advance and keep a printed copy with you.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in São Tomé and Príncipe, not from when you leave. Double-check before applying.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official eVisa portal at https://evisa.smf.st/. Fill in your personal details, passport info, and travel dates. Upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee online with a credit or debit card. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
You'll get an email with the approved eVisa as a PDF. Print at least two copies — one to hand over at immigration, one as backup. Save a digital copy on your phone too.
3
Arrive at São Tomé International Airport (TMS)
After landing, head to the immigration hall. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, printed eVisa, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 10–15 minutes if you have all documents.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually no customs declaration for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.
