Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay in Belgium
Your Japanese passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay in Belgium. Airlines may still enforce the 6-month validity rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa-free entry to Schengen
Immigration at Brussels Airport will ask for proof of departure from the Schengen area within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or onward ticket ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a signed letter from your host with their address and contact number. Border officers occasionally ask for it at random checks.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a recent bank statement showing at least €45 per day of your stay, or a credit card with a sufficient limit. Officers rarely check this for Japanese passport holders, but it helps if questioned.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen zone, not just Belgium. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, that counts toward your 90-day limit. Keep track of your days.
Travel insurance is smart
While not mandatory for entry, a single hospital visit can cost hundreds of euros. A basic travel insurance policy (like SafetyWing) covers medical emergencies and trip disruptions.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Brussels Airport or other Schengen entry point
You'll go through passport control. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and how long you're staying. Answer clearly.
2
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp is your proof of legal stay. Keep your passport safe.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There are no additional visa-related steps.
