RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival at Dakar Blaise Diagne International Airport
Get your visa on arrival at the airport. Pay the fee in cash (CFA francs, euros, or US dollars) — exact change helps. Have a passport photo ready.Required
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the visa sticker. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by Senegal, but airlines may ask for 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they rarely check the date, but they want to see you're leaving.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. Officers may ask for it if you look uncertain about where you're staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash, card, or bank statement
Have at least 100,000 CFA francs (~$165) in cash or a credit card with available balance. Officers rarely check, but it's a formal requirement for visa on arrival.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash — no cards, no mobile money. Bring CFA francs or euros. There are ATMs after immigration, but not before. If you arrive without cash, you may be turned away or have to borrow from other travellers.
Visa on arrival is straightforward
The process at Dakar airport usually takes 15–30 minutes. Have your documents ready, be patient, and you'll be through quickly. The officers are used to processing Kenyan passports.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dakar airport
After landing at Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. The counter is before passport control, usually on the left side of the arrivals hall.
2
Fill out the visa form
You'll be given a small form to complete — name, passport number, flight details, address in Senegal. Have your accommodation info handy.
3
Pay the visa fee
Hand over your passport, form, and cash (CFA or euros). The officer will process payment and issue a receipt. Keep this receipt — you may need it when leaving.
4
Get your visa sticker
The visa sticker is placed in your passport. Check the validity dates before walking away. Then proceed to passport control.
5
Pass through immigration
Present your passport with the new visa, your boarding pass, and any requested documents (return ticket, accommodation). Answer basic questions about your stay. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

The standard single-entry tourist visa costs around 50,000 XOF (about €75 or 10,000 KES). Bring cash in CFA francs or euros — cards are not accepted at the visa counter. The exact amount can change slightly, so carry a little extra.
No, the visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than the visa allows (typically 30 days), you must leave and re-enter, or apply for a longer visa at the Direction de la Police des Frontières in Dakar before your current visa expires. Overstaying can result in fines.
Yes, proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for all travellers arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission. Kenya is not on the high-risk list, but if you've recently travelled to a yellow fever endemic country, you'll need the certificate. Even if not required, it's strongly recommended — carry your WHO yellow card.
Visa on arrival is available at all official entry points, including land borders (e.g., from The Gambia, Mali, Mauritania). The process is similar — fill a form, pay in CFA, get your sticker. However, land border posts may have less cash change, so bring small denominations.
If you're transiting and not leaving the airport transit area, you generally don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport (even for a few hours), you must get a visa on arrival. The transit area at DSS is small — most travellers prefer to clear immigration.
Your passport (6+ months validity), a completed visa form (provided at the counter), one passport photo (optional but helpful), your return/onward ticket, and cash for the fee. Having your accommodation address written down speeds things up.
Generally yes, but use common sense. Keep your cash in a money belt or hidden pouch. ATMs are widely available in Dakar and other cities, but the visa counter only takes cash. Withdraw CFA after clearing immigration if you need more.
