RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Vietnam. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity beyond departure — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound booking ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Have at least $500 USD in cash or a recent bank statement. Border officials seldom check, but budget airlines may ask at check-in.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Vietnamese immigration will deny entry if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your arrival date. Airlines also check this at check-in. No exceptions.
No visa needed — but have your documents ready
You don't need to apply for anything in advance. Just show up with a valid passport, a return ticket, and a hotel booking. Keep them in your carry-on for a smooth entry.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months), print or screenshot your return ticket and first night's hotel booking. Keep them in your carry-on.
2
Arrive at the airport in Vietnam
You'll land at Noi Bai (Hanoi), Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City), Da Nang, or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Arrivals'.
3
Join the foreign passport queue
Look for the lane marked 'Foreign Passports' or 'All Passports'. Avoid the Vietnamese citizen lanes. Queues can be 15–45 minutes at peak times.
4
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport, and if asked, your return ticket and hotel booking. The officer will check your visa-free eligibility, stamp your passport, and return it.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs (usually green channel for nothing to declare). You're in Vietnam.
