Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for a Schengen visa
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Finnish embassy or consulate in Sri Lanka. Submit your application at least 15 days before travel — processing takes up to 15 calendar days. Use the official portal to find the application form and appointment booking.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area
Your passport must have at least two blank pages for entry stamps. The 3-month validity rule applies to your entire stay in the Schengen zone — not just Finland. Airlines check this at check-in, so verify your passport expiry before booking.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa application and at border control
You need a confirmed return or onward ticket out of the Schengen area. Border officers at Helsinki Airport check this for all visa holders. A flight booking showing your departure from Schengen territory is sufficient.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Show a hotel reservation covering your entire stay in Finland, or a signed invitation letter from your host. The visa application requires this, and border officers may ask to see it on arrival. Print the confirmation or have it on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Show you have at least €50 per day for your stay in Finland. Bank statements from the last 3 months or a credit card with sufficient limit work. Border officers rarely ask, but the visa officer will check this during application.Recommended
Visa required — apply well in advance
Sri Lankan passport holders cannot enter Finland without a pre-approved visa. Start your application at least 4–6 weeks before your trip. The visa is valid for all 27 Schengen countries, not just Finland.
Travel insurance is mandatory for the visa
Your insurance must cover at least €30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation, and be valid across the entire Schengen area. Without it, your visa application will be rejected.

Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can extend to 30–45 days if additional checks are needed. You'll get an email or SMS when your passport is ready for collection.
5
Collect your passport
Return to the VFS center with your receipt to collect your passport. If approved, check the visa sticker for correct dates and validity.
6
