Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for your entire stay in Bulgaria. Since Bulgaria is part of the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — not per country. Airlines check this at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready. A bus or train ticket to another Schengen country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host. Border officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to around €50 per day of your stay. Officers almost never check this for Luxembourg passport holders, but it's good to have.Recommended
Bulgaria is not yet in Schengen
Although Bulgaria uses Schengen rules for visa-free stays, it is not a full Schengen member. You will go through passport control when entering from other Schengen countries, and your 90-day clock runs independently.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), book your return/onward ticket, and save accommodation confirmations and travel insurance details on your phone.
2
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport ready and be prepared to show your return ticket and accommodation if asked.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about the purpose of your visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. Keep it safe — you'll need it for exit.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen Area rule, even though Bulgaria is not yet a full Schengen member.
No. The visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit before your 90 days expire.
It's not always checked, but immigration can ask for proof of onward travel. Always have a return or onward ticket booked — a screenshot on your phone is fine.
You may be denied boarding or entry. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is counted from your entry date, not your departure.
Not officially required for short stays, but strongly recommended. Medical costs can be high, and having insurance gives peace of mind.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or family visits. Any paid work requires a work visa or permit.
Report it immediately to the local police and contact the Luxembourg embassy in Sofia. They can issue an emergency travel document.
