Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in Hong Kong. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months validity beyond your departure date — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at the counter before you get your entry stamp.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Hong Kong. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. There's no fixed minimum, but around 3,000 HKD per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
6-month passport rule is strict
Immigration officers check your passport validity from the day you enter, not your departure. If you're even one day short, you'll be refused entry. Renew early.
Keep a digital copy of everything
Take photos of your passport, return ticket, and hotel booking. If you lose your phone or documents, having backups in the cloud makes replacement much easier.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue — it's usually faster.
2
Present your passport and boarding pass
Hand over your passport and the boarding pass from your flight. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before walking away — if it says something shorter, ask why.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted items. That's it — you're in.
