Visa on arrival
You get a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and at land borders. Pay the fee in USD, EUR, or NPR — 15 days costs $30, 30 days costs $50, 90 days costs $125. Have two passport-size photos ready, though the immigration counter can take your photo for an extra fee.Check visa feesRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
Nepal immigration strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding by the airline or turned away at immigration. Carry a photocopy of the bio-data page as backup.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Kathmandu airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a bus/train ticket out of Nepal. If you plan to leave overland, a confirmed bus ticket to India works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration rarely asks for this, but the visa application form asks for an address in Nepal. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. If you are trekking, a booking at a guesthouse in Kathmandu for the first night is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Officers may ask how you plan to fund your stay. Carry at least $200 USD equivalent in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient balance. ATMs are plentiful in Kathmandu but unreliable in remote trekking areas.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa-on-arrival counter at Tribhuvan International Airport does not accept credit or debit cards. Bring USD 30 in cash (or equivalent in NPR). ATMs are available after immigration, but you'll need cash before that.
Photo booth available but costs extra
If you forget your passport photos, there's a photo booth near the visa counter. It costs about NPR 200 (USD 1.50) and takes a few minutes. But it's cheaper to bring your own.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the visa application form
After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, pick up a visa application form at the counter before the immigration queue. Fill it in with your passport details, flight info, and accommodation address. Keep it with your photos and cash.
2
Queue at the visa-on-arrival counter
Join the line at the 'Visa on Arrival' counter. Hand over your form, passport, photos, and USD 30. The officer will process your visa and give you a receipt.
3
Proceed to immigration
Take the receipt and your passport to the immigration officer. They'll stamp your passport and return it. You're now cleared to enter Nepal.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, the same visa-on-arrival facility is available at major land border crossings like Sunauli (from India) and Kakarbhitta (from India). The process is similar — fill out the form, pay USD 30, and provide photos. Note that some smaller crossings may not offer this, so check ahead.
You can pay in Nepalese rupees at the official exchange rate. There are currency exchange counters at the airport before immigration. But it's simpler to bring USD — just make sure the bills are in good condition (no tears or marks).
No, the visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for a different visa type before traveling, such as a tourist visa from a Nepalese embassy. Overstaying can result in fines of NPR 5 per day.
Yes, you need proof of onward travel — a bus or train ticket to the next country works. Immigration wants to see you'll leave Nepal within the visa period. A screenshot of your booking is fine.
You will be denied entry. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling. If you're already in Nepal and your passport expires, contact your embassy for an emergency travel document.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended — medical costs in Nepal can be high, and insurance covers evacuation, theft, and trip cancellation. Some trekking permits require it, so check your itinerary.
Yes, Myanmar passport holders can apply for an e-visa online before travel. It costs about USD 30 and is processed within 3-5 business days. The e-visa is valid for 90 days from issue and allows a single entry. It's a good option if you want to skip the airport queue.
