Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Hong Kong. No 6-month rule applies here — just cover your stay dates. Airlines may still ask for 6 months validity at check-in, so check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Hong Kong ready. Without one, you risk being denied entry.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it speeds things up if they do. A simple booking.com confirmation works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready. Hong Kong doesn't enforce a specific minimum amount, but showing you have enough for your stay (around HK$500–1,000 per day) covers you.Recommended
Keep your passport stamp visible
When you leave Hong Kong, immigration will check your entry stamp to confirm you didn't overstay. Keep your passport handy until you're through security.
No visa-free extension
Unlike some countries, Hong Kong does not allow you to extend a visa-free stay. If you need more time, you must leave and re-enter, or apply for a visa before your trip.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue.
2
Present your passport and boarding pass
Hand over your passport (open to the photo page) and your boarding pass. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and concisely.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before walking away — if the dates look wrong, ask immediately.
4
Collect luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, head to the baggage claim carousels, then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no dutiable goods. If you have items to declare (e.g., large amounts of cash, restricted goods), use the red channel.
