Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival application
Visa on arrival (VOA)
Get your visa on arrival at major Indonesian airports and seaports. Pay the $35 USD fee in cash (USD or IDR accepted) at the VOA counter before immigration. The visa allows 30 days of stay and cannot be extended.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
Indonesia strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. Airlines check this at check-in and will deny boarding if your passport expires sooner. Your passport also needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Indonesia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward flight ticket. Budget airlines at Ngurah Rai (Bali) and Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta) are especially strict about this. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask for your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Keep a printed copy or have it accessible on your phone. This is not always checked but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient funds for your stay
Officers can request proof you have at least $1,000 USD or equivalent for your trip. A bank statement, credit card, or cash in hand works. This is rarely asked for short tourist visits but better to have it.Recommended
Cash only at VoA counter
The Visa on Arrival fee must be paid in cash. No credit cards, no mobile payments. Bring 500,000 IDR or equivalent in US dollars/euros. ATMs are available after immigration, but you'll need cash before that.
Extension is possible but plan ahead
You can extend the VoA once for 30 days, but the process takes 3–5 working days. Visit an immigration office at least a week before your first 30 days expire. Bring your passport, a copy of your return ticket, and the extension fee (about 500,000 IDR).

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At any Indonesian international airport (Jakarta, Bali, etc.), head to the Visa on Arrival counter before passport control. Look for the 'Visa on Arrival' sign.
2
Pay the fee and get the sticker
Hand over your passport and pay 500,000 IDR (cash only — US dollars, euros, or Indonesian rupiah accepted). The officer will stick the VoA sticker in your passport.
3
Proceed to passport control
Go to the immigration queue with your passport and the VoA sticker. The officer will stamp you in for 30 days. Keep your boarding pass handy.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, pick up your bags and head to customs. You may need to fill out a customs declaration form (usually digital now).
