Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Maltese passport needs to be valid only for the time you plan to stay in Panama. Airlines sometimes enforce a 6-month validity rule, so check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Panama
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket within 90 days. Airlines at check-in also verify this before issuing your boarding pass.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital hotel reservation ready. If staying with friends, carry their address and phone number — officers sometimes ask for it.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers may ask for bank statements or cash to confirm you have enough for your trip. A credit card and a recent statement usually suffices.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity at check-in. If it's less than 6 months from your arrival date, you won't be allowed to board. Renew early.
Keep a copy of your passport
Take a photo of your passport bio page and entry stamp. If you lose your passport, this makes replacement at the embassy much faster.

What happens at the border

1
Before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from arrival). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Get travel insurance and a local SIM/eSIM. Save all confirmations as screenshots on your phone.
2
At the airport (departure)
At check-in, the airline will verify your passport validity and onward ticket. They may also ask for proof of accommodation. If you don't have a return ticket, you may be denied boarding.
3
On arrival at Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
Follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry. No visa fee. The whole process usually takes 15-30 minutes.
4
After immigration
Collect your luggage, then proceed to customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Exit into the arrivals hall.
