Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
UK Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW)You need to get this online approval before you fly – it's not a visa sticker, but it's mandatory.
Apply online before travel
Malaysian passport holders must obtain an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) before travelling to the UK for tourism, business, or study of up to 6 months. The EVW is valid for a single entry and must be used within 6 months of issue. Apply online at least 48 hours before departure.Required
Passport validityMake sure your passport doesn't expire too soon – it must be valid for half a year after you land.
At least 6 months from arrival
Your Malaysian passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of arrival in the UK.Required
Blank passport pagesYou need an empty page in your passport for the border officer to stamp.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least one blank page for the entry stamp.Required
Return or onward ticketIt's a good idea to have a flight out of the UK booked – they might ask to see it.
Not always checked, but recommended
While not a formal requirement for EVW holders, UK Border Force officers may ask to see evidence of your return or onward travel. It is strongly recommended to have a confirmed ticket.Recommended
Proof of fundsHave bank statements or cash to show you can pay for your trip – they might ask.
Sufficient funds for your stay
You should be able to show that you have enough money to cover your accommodation and living expenses for your stay in the UK. The amount is not fixed, but you must be able to support yourself without working.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any extra forms when you arrive – just go through passport control.
Not required
There is no arrival declaration required for entry into the UK for Malaysian citizens. Not required
Visa required — no exceptions
Malaysian passport holders cannot enter the UK visa-free. There is no eTA or visa-on-arrival option. You must apply for a visa before you travel. Plan ahead — processing takes 3–6 weeks.
Passport validity counts from arrival, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you land in the UK. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before applying for the visa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your UK visa online
Go to gov.uk/apply-uk-visa, fill out the Standard Visitor visa application, pay the fee (currently £115 for 6 months), and book a biometric appointment at a VFS Global centre in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, or Johor Bahru.
2
Attend biometric appointment
Bring your printed application, passport, and appointment confirmation to the VFS centre. They'll take your photo and fingerprints. This usually takes 15–30 minutes.
3
Wait for visa decision
Standard processing is 3 weeks, but can take up to 6 weeks during peak season (summer, holidays). You'll get an email when your passport is ready for collection or courier.
4
Prepare your documents for travel
Before you fly, print or save to your phone: your visa approval email, return ticket, accommodation booking, travel insurance, and bank statements. Keep them in your carry-on.
5
Arrive at UK border control
At Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, or any UK airport, join the 'All Other Passports' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa vignette. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Answer clearly and calmly.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 3 weeks, but it can take up to 6 weeks during busy periods (June–September, Christmas). You can pay for priority service (5 working days, ~£250) or super priority service (next working day, ~£1000) at the VFS centre.
No. Standard Visitor visas cannot be extended. You must leave before your visa expires. If you need to stay longer for a specific reason (e.g., medical treatment), you must apply for a different visa type before you travel.
Immigration officers can ask, but they rarely do for short visits. Still, carry bank statements or a credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. A good rule: have at least £50–100 per day available.
You'll receive a refusal letter explaining why. Common reasons: insufficient funds, unclear travel plans, or weak ties to Malaysia. You can reapply — address the issues in your new application. There's no cooling-off period, but you'll pay the fee again.
No. A UK visa only allows you to enter the UK. If you're flying via Ireland, you'll need to check Irish visa requirements separately. The Common Travel Area (CTA) between the UK and Ireland doesn't bypass visa rules.
No. A UK visa covers England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. You can travel freely between them.
Up to 6 months per visit. The visa is usually valid for 6 months from the date of issue, but you can enter multiple times within that period as long as each stay doesn't exceed 6 months.
