Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire 14-day stay in Iran. Airlines at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will check this before boarding. No minimum 6-month validity is required beyond your departure date.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Iran
Immigration at Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in Tehran routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready. Airlines may also check this at check-in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your hotel booking confirmation or host's address and phone number ready. Immigration officers at IKA sometimes ask for this, especially if you're arriving without a pre-arranged tour.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least $500 USD in cash or have a credit/debit card that works internationally. Iran's banking system is largely disconnected from global networks, so cash is the most reliable option.Recommended
No visa-free extension
The 14-day visa-free entry cannot be extended. If you overstay, you'll be fined IRR 500,000 (~$12 USD) per day. Plan your trip carefully to avoid this.
Cash is king
International credit and debit cards don't work in Iran. Bring enough USD or EUR to exchange for rials. Some hotels and shops accept foreign currency directly.
Transit without visa
You can transit through Iran without a visa as long as you stay airside. This applies at IKA, MHD, and SYZ airports. No need to clear immigration.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport
Fly into any international airport in Iran — most common are Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in Tehran, Shiraz (SYZ), or Mashhad (MHD). Have your passport and return ticket ready before you reach the immigration counter.
2
Queue at immigration
Join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. The officer will check your passport, ask your purpose of visit, and may request your return ticket and hotel booking. Answer clearly and confidently. The process usually takes 5–10 minutes.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 14-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp says '14 days' before leaving the counter. If it's less, ask for correction immediately.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Declare any large amounts of cash (over €10,000 or equivalent). Then exit into the arrivals hall.
