Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in El Salvador. Immigration officers at San Salvador Airport check this at the booth — they don't care about 6 months beyond departure, just cover your stay.
Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from El Salvador
Immigration at Comalapa Airport asks for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Budget airlines like Volaris and Avianca check this at check-in too — have a printed or digital copy ready.
Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration officers sometimes ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number. A booking.com reservation on your phone works fine.
Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers may ask how you'll fund your trip. Have a bank statement, credit card, or cash (around $500 USD equivalent) ready. ATMs in El Salvador dispense USD, so carrying a card is usually enough.
Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines will check your passport validity at check-in. If you have less than 6 months left, you won't be allowed to board. Renew early.
Keep a digital copy of your documents
Save screenshots of your passport info page, return ticket, and hotel booking on your phone. If you lose your passport, these make replacement much easier.
What happens at the border
1
Arrive at immigration counter
At San Salvador International Airport (SAL), follow signs to 'Extranjeros' (Foreigners). Join the queue for non-residents. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present documents
Hand over your passport and any requested documents (return ticket, hotel booking). The officer will check your passport validity and may ask about your stay. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the number of days granted (usually 180). Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually a green channel for nothing to declare. Keep your passport handy for spot checks.
Enter your arrival date and we'll tell you exactly when you need to leave.
