Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for an Irish visa
You need a visa before traveling to Ireland. Submit your application online through the Irish Immigration Service website, then attend a biometric appointment at a Visa Application Centre in Nigeria. Processing takes 8–12 weeks for most applications.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Nigerian passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Ireland. Ireland does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Dublin Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready. If you're continuing to another country, show that ticket instead.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host in Ireland. Officers at immigration may ask where you're staying — having a printed address speeds things up.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card showing you can cover your stay. There's no fixed minimum, but around €50–€70 per day is a safe benchmark. Officers rarely ask, but it's better to have it ready.Recommended
Visa required — no exceptions
Nigerian passport holders cannot enter Ireland without a visa. There is no visa-on-arrival, no eTA, and no waiver. Apply well in advance.
Processing times are long
Standard processing is 8–12 weeks, but can stretch to 16 weeks during busy periods. Do not book flights or accommodation until you have the visa in hand.
eSIM saves time at the airport
Buy an Airalo eSIM before you fly. It activates the moment you land in Ireland — no need to queue at a mobile shop or find a SIM card vending machine.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to the Irish visa website (AVATS) and fill in the form. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, accommodation info, and employment details. After submitting, you'll get a reference number and a list of documents to bring to your appointment.
2
Book and attend your visa appointment
Schedule an appointment at the Irish visa application centre in Abuja (Plot 1139, Ahmadu Bello Way) or Lagos (Plot 9, Alhaji Abass Street). Bring your printed application, passport, passport photos, and all supporting documents. You'll give biometrics (fingerprints and photo).
3
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 8–12 weeks. During busy periods (summer, Christmas) it can take longer. You can track your application online using your reference number. Do not book flights until you have the visa.
4
Collect your passport
Once a decision is made, you'll get an email to collect your passport from the visa application centre. If approved, the visa vignette will be stuck inside your passport. Check the dates and conditions carefully.
5
Arrive in Ireland and go through immigration
At Dublin Airport (or Shannon/Cork), join the 'Non-EU' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa. The immigration officer may ask: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long you're staying, and proof of funds. Answer clearly and honestly. They'll stamp your passport with the allowed stay.
