Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Norwegian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Guyana. No minimum validity period beyond your departure date is required by Guyanese immigration, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Guyana
Immigration officers at Cheddi Jagan International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Guyana. Border officers occasionally ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have access to at least 500 USD in cash, a credit card, or a bank statement. Immigration may ask how you'll fund your stay — showing a card or cash on hand usually satisfies them.Recommended
No visa needed — but have your documents ready
You don't need a visa, but immigration officers may ask for your return ticket and accommodation booking. Keep screenshots on your phone to speed things up.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close to expiring, renew before you go — you'll be turned away at the border.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (GEO)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration'. Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport, return ticket (screenshot or printed), and accommodation booking ready. The officer will stamp you in for up to 90 days.
2
Pass through customs
After immigration, collect your luggage and proceed to customs. Declare any items over the duty-free limit. There's usually a green channel for nothing to declare.
3
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Taxis are available outside the terminal — agree on a fare before getting in (about $20-30 USD to Georgetown).

Frequently asked questions

No. Norwegian passport holders get visa-free access for up to 90 days. Just show up with your passport and a return ticket.
No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave Guyana and re-enter, or apply for a visa from a Guyana embassy before your trip.
You'll be denied entry. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6 months are counted from your entry date, not your departure.
Guyana requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you're arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. Norway is not a risk country, but if you've recently traveled to one (e.g., Brazil, parts of Africa), you'll need the certificate. Check with your doctor.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. For work or study, you need the appropriate visa from a Guyana embassy before traveling.
The local currency is the Guyanese dollar (GYD). US dollars are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and taxis, but you'll get change in local currency. ATMs dispense GYD. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels but not everywhere.
Guyana has areas with higher crime rates, especially in Georgetown at night. Stick to well-lit areas, avoid walking alone after dark, and use registered taxis. The interior (Kaieteur Falls, rainforest) is generally safe for guided tours.
