Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Hong Kong. No minimum validity period beyond your stay is required by Hong Kong immigration, but some airlines may ask for 6 months validity — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this at the arrival counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Hong Kong. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
You should be able to show you have enough cash, credit cards, or bank statements to cover your expenses. There's no fixed minimum amount, but having around 3,000 HKD per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it's even one day short, you will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Check your passport now, not the night before your flight.
eSIMs save time at the airport
Hong Kong airport has SIM card vending machines, but queues can be long. An Airalo eSIM activates the moment you land — no queue, no paperwork. Just scan a QR code before you fly.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your passport at the immigration counter
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your validity, ask a few quick questions (purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying). Answer clearly and briefly. They may ask to see your return ticket or hotel booking.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (90 days). Check the stamp before walking away. If something looks wrong, ask the officer to correct it.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed through customs
After immigration, go to the baggage claim carousel for your flight. Then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted items. If you have goods to declare (e.g., large amounts of cash, tobacco, alcohol), use the red channel.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable for Norwegian passport holders. You must leave Hong Kong before the 90 days are up. If you overstay, you risk fines, detention, and a ban from re-entering.
You cannot extend the visa-free stay. You would need to leave Hong Kong (e.g., to Macau or mainland China) and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits. For long-term stays, apply for a visa or permit before you travel through the Hong Kong Immigration Department.
Norwegian passport holders can visit Macau visa-free for up to 90 days. For mainland China, you need a visa unless you're transiting (certain cities allow 24-144 hours transit without a visa). Check the latest rules before you go.
You must have a valid passport to remain in Hong Kong. If your passport expires, contact the Norwegian consulate in Hong Kong to get an emergency passport. You'll need to leave Hong Kong as soon as you have the new document.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. If you plan to work, study, or volunteer, you must apply for the appropriate visa or permit before you travel.
No, Hong Kong abolished arrival cards for most visitors in 2023. You just present your passport at immigration. However, you may still be asked to provide a local address and flight details verbally.
Stay calm. Ask the immigration officer for the reason in writing. You have the right to contact the Norwegian consulate in Hong Kong (phone: +852 2585 8500). They can assist but cannot override immigration decisions. In most cases, you'll be put on the next flight back to Norway.
