What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa Online
Go to the official Indian eVisa website (indianvisaonline.gov.in). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $25–$100 depending on duration and nationality). Submit and wait for approval, usually within 72 hours.
2
Receive eVisa and Print
Once approved, you'll get an email with a PDF of your eVisa. Print a copy and save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at the airport check-in and at Indian immigration.
3
Arrive at Indian Airport
At the airport, follow signs for 'Foreigners' or 'eVisa' counters. Have your passport, eVisa printout, and return ticket ready. The officer will take your photo and fingerprints. Common entry airports: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kochi, Goa.
4
Collect Luggage and Exit
After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel. Proceed through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now free to enter India.

Frequently asked questions

Typically 3–5 business days, but apply at least 4 days before your flight. In peak season it can take longer. The fee is usually around $25–$100 depending on the eVisa type (tourist, business, medical).
No, the eVisa is not extendable. You must leave India before the 60-day validity expires. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type from a Norwegian embassy before travel.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival. If it expires sooner, renew your passport before applying for the eVisa. Immigration will deny entry if your passport doesn't meet this requirement.
If you're transiting and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you need to leave the airport or have a long layover, you'll need an eVisa or a transit visa. Check with your airline.
No, the eVisa is only valid at 28 designated airports and 5 seaports. Major airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kochi, and Goa are included. Check the official list before booking flights.
Rejections are rare but can happen if your photo doesn't meet requirements or if there's an error in your application. You can reapply after correcting the issue. There's no refund of the fee. If rejected, you'd need to apply for a regular visa at the Indian embassy in Oslo.
Cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, but cash is still king in smaller towns and markets. ATMs are common. Carry some Indian Rupees for taxis, street food, and tips. Notify your bank before travel to avoid card blocks.
