Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
You need an eVisa to enter Nigeria. Apply at the Nigeria Immigration Service portal at least 2 weeks before your trip. The eVisa is a single-entry permit — you cannot extend it once you're in the country.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Norwegian passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Nigeria. Carry a photocopy of the bio-data page separately in case of loss or theft.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Lagos and Abuja airports routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Without one, you may be denied boarding or entry. A printed itinerary or e-ticket works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration may ask where you're staying — a printed booking confirmation avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough funds for your stay. There's no fixed minimum, but having at least $500 USD equivalent in cash or card helps at the border.Recommended
Yellow fever certificate is mandatory
You must have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate (the yellow card) to enter Nigeria. Without it, you may be vaccinated at the airport or denied entry. Get the shot at least 10 days before travel.
eVisa is not a sticker — it's a letter
The eVisa approval is a PDF letter, not a visa sticker in your passport. Print it or save it clearly on your phone. Immigration officers will check it when you arrive.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the Nigeria Immigration Service portal (https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/) and complete the eVisa application. You'll need to upload a digital passport photo, a copy of your passport bio page, and your travel details. Pay the visa fee online with a credit or debit card.
2
Wait for approval
Processing usually takes 3–5 business days, but can be longer during peak periods. You'll receive an eVisa approval letter by email. Print it or save a clear copy on your phone.
3
Prepare your documents for arrival
Before you fly, gather: your passport (valid 6+ months), the eVisa approval letter, your return ticket, and your first night's hotel booking. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at a Nigerian airport
You'll land at Lagos (LOS), Abuja (ABV), or another international airport. Follow signs to immigration. Join the queue for foreign passport holders.
5
Present your documents at immigration
Hand over your passport and eVisa approval letter. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel booking. Answer questions clearly. They'll stamp your passport and let you through.
6
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're now in Nigeria.
