Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Slovakia
Your Norwegian passport needs to be valid for the whole time you are in Slovakia. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but some airlines still enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Bratislava airport checks for a return or onward ticket out of the Schengen zone. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country works too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital hotel reservation, or a letter of invitation from your host in Slovakia. Border officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need it ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry at least €56 per day of your stay in cash or on a card. Officers at land borders sometimes ask to see bank statements or cash.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Slovakia is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free limit applies to all 27 Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen country, those days count toward your 90-day total. Use the EU short-stay calculator to avoid overstaying.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Border officers will check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you travel. A passport with less than 6 months validity is a common reason for refusal at the border.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity — 6 months from entry date. Print or save on your phone: return ticket, first night accommodation confirmation, and travel insurance. Download an eSIM or arrange a local SIM so you have data on arrival.
2
Arrive at the airport in Slovakia
You'll land at Bratislava Airport (BTS) or Košice Airport (KSC). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Border Control'. EU citizens use separate lanes; as a Norwegian, you can use the 'All Passports' lane.
3
Present your passport to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and return date. Answer clearly and honestly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation proof.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp — it should show the date. Keep your passport safe; you'll need it for hotel check-ins and any police checks.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for most tourists). You're free to enter Slovakia.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen Area, so days spent in other Schengen countries count toward your 90-day limit. Use the EU's short-stay calculator to track your days.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism purposes. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa (type D) from the Slovak embassy in Norway before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines, a ban, or deportation.
You may be refused entry. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is a strict requirement for entry into the Schengen Area.
Yes, you need proof that you will leave the Schengen Area before your 90 days are up. This can be a flight to a non-Schengen country, a train ticket, or a bus ticket. A screenshot on your phone is acceptable.
No, the visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed under the visa-free regime. If you plan to work remotely, consider applying for Slovakia's digital nomad visa (if available) or consult the embassy.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may face a fine (typically €100–300), a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years, or deportation. Always track your days carefully.
No, for stays under 90 days, registration is not required. Your hotel will handle any necessary registration. If staying with friends or family, they may need to notify the local Foreign Police office within 3 working days — but this is their responsibility, not yours.
