Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least the length of your stay in Tajikistan. Tajikistan does not formally require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce their own rules — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tajikistan
Immigration officers at Dushanbe International Airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may request your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Keep a printed confirmation or a digital copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officials can ask for evidence of sufficient funds — roughly $50 USD per day is a safe benchmark. A recent bank statement or a credit card with available limit works.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Tajikistan requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to fly.
Land border crossings may have limited hours
If you're entering by land, check the specific crossing's opening hours in advance. Some remote crossings close at night or have irregular schedules. The Pamir Highway crossing at Kyzyl-Art (from Kyrgyzstan) is only open from 8 AM to 6 PM.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport (or land border)
Most travellers fly into Dushanbe International Airport (DYU). At immigration, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport validity, ask your purpose of visit, and may request your return ticket or hotel booking. The process usually takes 5–10 minutes.
2
Receive entry stamp
Once approved, the officer stamps your passport with a visa-free entry permit valid for up to 30 days. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the dates are correct. Keep the stamp visible; you'll need it when leaving.
3
Collect baggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. If you're carrying more than $3,000 in cash or equivalent, you must declare it.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a visa in advance at a Tajik embassy or consulate before travelling. Overstaying can result in fines of around 200–400 TJS per day (roughly $20–$40 USD).
For stays under 30 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer than 30 days (with a visa), you must register with the Migration Service within 10 days of arrival. Hotels usually handle this for you.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Tajikistan strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before travelling.
Yes, several land border crossings are open to foreigners, including the crossings at Oybek (from Uzbekistan) and Kyzyl-Art (from Kyrgyzstan). The same visa-free rules apply. However, some remote crossings may have limited hours or require a pre-arranged permit for certain areas (like the Pamir Highway). Check current conditions before heading out.
No, it's not mandatory for entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical evacuation from remote areas can cost thousands of dollars. Some travel insurance policies exclude Tajikistan, so check your coverage before buying.
Report the loss immediately to the local police and get a police report. Then contact the Norwegian Embassy in Moscow (which covers Tajikistan) or the nearest Norwegian consulate. You'll need a replacement passport or emergency travel document to leave. The process can take several days.
Yes, some border regions (especially near Afghanistan and China) require a special permit from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Pamir Highway) requires a separate permit for foreign travellers. Your tour operator or embassy can help arrange this.
