Norwegian passport holders can visit Ukraine without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since 2017, and nothing has changed for 2026. Just show up at the border with your passport and you're good to go.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Ukraine. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Ukrainian law, but some airlines may ask for 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Border officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave within the 90-day visa-free period. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines at departure also check this before letting you board.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can request evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. Carry a bank statement or a credit card with a reasonable limit — there's no fixed minimum amount published, but roughly €50 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
War situation — travel at your own risk
Ukraine is under a state of martial law due to the ongoing war with Russia. Air raid alerts are common, and some regions are closed to foreigners. Check the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advice before booking. Travel insurance may not cover war-related incidents.
90 days per 180-day period
The 90-day visa-free stay is not a calendar year limit. It's calculated over any rolling 180-day window. So if you stay 90 days, you must leave for at least 90 days before returning. Keep track of your days.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the border
Whether you fly into Kyiv Boryspil (KBP), Lviv (LWO), or Odesa (ODS), or cross by land from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, or Moldova, you'll join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and any supporting documents ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport to the border officer. They'll check your photo, validity, and stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 30–60 seconds per person.
3
Answer any questions
The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. If you have a return ticket or hotel booking, offer it only if asked.
4
Receive your entry stamp
You'll get a stamp in your passport with the date of entry. That stamp determines your 90-day allowance. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotels, SIM cards, and any police checks.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can work remotely for a foreign employer while in Ukraine on a visa-free stay. The 90-day limit still applies, and you cannot take local employment without a work visa.
You cannot extend a visa-free stay. You must leave Ukraine before day 90. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a temporary residence permit (e.g., for study, work, or family reunification) at the State Migration Service in Ukraine before your 90 days expire.
If you stay longer than 90 days, you must register with the State Migration Service. For stays under 90 days, registration is not required. Hotels usually handle registration automatically for their guests.
It is strongly advised not to enter Ukraine from Russia or Belarus due to the ongoing war. Border crossings from those countries are closed or extremely restricted. Use land borders from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, or Moldova instead.
No, travel insurance is not mandatory for Norwegian passport holders entering Ukraine. However, it is highly recommended because medical costs can be high and public healthcare may not cover foreigners.
Overstaying can result in a fine (around 1,700–3,400 UAH, roughly €40–€80), deportation, and a ban from re-entering Ukraine for up to 3 years. Don't risk it — leave on time.
No, Norwegian passport holders do not need a visa for transit through Ukraine. The same 90-day visa-free rules apply. Just make sure you have a valid onward ticket and your passport meets the validity requirements.
