What happens at the border

1
Choose an authorized tour operator
You must book a guided tour with a company approved by the DPRK government. They will handle your visa application, itinerary, and all logistics. Popular operators include Koryo Tours and Young Pioneer Tours.
2
Submit visa application through operator
Your operator will ask for a scanned copy of your passport, a passport photo, and a completed application form. They submit it to the DPRK embassy in Beijing or another designated office. Processing takes 2–4 weeks.
3
Receive visa approval and travel documents
Once approved, the operator will send you a visa confirmation number or a physical visa sticker (depending on your departure point). You'll also get your tour itinerary and hotel confirmations.
4
Travel to North Korea
Most visitors fly into Pyongyang Sunan International Airport via Beijing or Shenyang. At immigration, present your passport, visa, and return ticket. You'll be met by your tour guide who will escort you throughout your stay.
5
Follow tour guide at all times
You are not allowed to wander independently. Your guide controls your schedule, meals, and movements. Photography restrictions apply — always ask before taking pictures.
