Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa at Maputo International Airport (MPM) or other designated border posts. Have $50–$80 USD in cash for the single-entry visa fee — they don't accept cards. Bring two passport-sized photos and a printed copy of your hotel booking or invitation letter.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must have at least 6 months validity beyond your intended departure date
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from the day you leave Mozambique. Airlines at Lima (LIM) check this strictly — if your passport expires sooner, they'll deny boarding. Two blank pages are required for the visa sticker and entry stamp.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Maputo airport ask to see a confirmed onward ticket before issuing the visa on arrival. A bus or ferry ticket out of Mozambique also works. Budget airlines like Ethiopian Airlines or Kenya Airways check this at check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to have printed
Have a printed hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host in Mozambique. Officers at the visa-on-arrival counter sometimes ask for it. A hostel booking confirmation or Airbnb receipt works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to have available
Carry at least $500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing you can support yourself during your stay. Immigration rarely checks this for short visits, but it's safer to have it ready. ATMs in Maputo dispense metical (MZN), but exchange rates at the airport are poor.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in US dollars cash. No cards, no local currency. Bring small bills ($20s and $10s) — large notes may not be accepted.
Yellow fever certificate required
If you're arriving from Peru or any country with yellow fever risk, you must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. Without it, you may be vaccinated on arrival or denied entry.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At Maputo International Airport (MPM) or any land border, head to the 'Visa on Arrival' counter. There's usually a separate queue from pre-approved visa holders.
2
Submit documents and pay fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (given on the plane or at the border), and your return ticket. Pay the visa fee in USD cash. The officer will process your visa.
3
Receive visa and enter
The visa is stamped into your passport. Check the validity dates before leaving the counter. Then proceed to baggage claim and customs.
