Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the time you plan to stay in Costa Rica — no 6-month rule here. Airlines sometimes enforce 6 months anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers at San José Airport ask for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Costa Rica ready — they check this at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a friend works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Costa Rica doesn't publish a fixed amount, but carrying a credit card and a bank statement showing a few hundred dollars covers you. I've never been asked, but it's smart to have it.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Costa Rican immigration will deny entry if your passport has less than 6 months of validity left from your arrival date. Check your passport now — if it's close, renew before booking flights.
Keep a copy of your entry stamp
Take a photo of the entry stamp in your passport. It shows the exact number of days you're allowed to stay. If you lose track, you can check the photo instead of guessing.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration
At any Costa Rican airport (San José Juan Santamaría or Liberia), join the 'Extranjeros' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
2
Present documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer questions clearly — they usually ask how long you're staying and where.
3
Get stamped in
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date and writes the number of days granted (usually 90 or 180). Check the stamp before walking away.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel, then pass through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 180 days per visit. Immigration officers usually grant 90 days initially, but you can request the full 180. Check your entry stamp for the exact number.
No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Costa Rica and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits.
Not if you're arriving directly from Portugal or Europe. The vaccine is only required if you've recently visited a country with yellow fever (e.g., Brazil, Colombia). Check the latest health requirements before travel.
You will be denied entry. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
The visa-free entry is for tourism only. Working remotely for a foreign employer is in a grey area — technically you need a work permit. Many digital nomads do it, but it's not officially allowed. Costa Rica has a digital nomad visa for longer stays.
No. There is no online arrival declaration required for Portuguese passport holders. Just show up with your passport and documents.
You'll be fined approximately $100 per month overstayed, and you may be banned from re-entering for a period. Overstaying can also cause problems with future visa applications.
