Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in Kiribati. Airlines may ask for at least 6 months validity — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Kiribati
Immigration officers at Bonriki International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Kiribati. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least AUD 1,000 (or equivalent) for your trip. Immigration may ask if you look under-resourced.Recommended
Limited medical facilities
Kiribati has basic medical facilities. For serious issues, you may need evacuation to Fiji or Australia. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended.
Passport validity is strict
Immigration officers check passport validity carefully. If your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival, you will be denied boarding by your airline or entry at the border. No exceptions.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Bonriki International Airport
You'll land at Kiribati's main international airport on Tarawa. After deplaning, follow signs to the immigration hall. It's a small airport, so queues are usually short.
2
Present your documents to immigration
Hand over your passport and completed arrival card (you'll get it on the plane). The officer will check your passport validity, blank page, and may ask for your return ticket. Answer any questions clearly.
3
Receive entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with a visitor permit valid for up to 90 days. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim. Then walk through customs (usually a quick check). You're free to enter Kiribati.
