Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
6 months validity required
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. Overstaying your visa-free period costs 100 MAD per day (about $10), paid at the airport departure counter.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at passport control. A flight booking confirmation or bus/train ticket out of Morocco works. If you arrive without one, expect to buy a same-day departure ticket at the airport.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your hotel reservation, riad booking, or host's address ready. Officers at Casablanca and Marrakech airports sometimes ask where you're staying. A printed or digital confirmation is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or card for your stay
Carry enough cash or a card to cover your stay — around 500 MAD per day is a safe benchmark. ATMs are widely available in cities but less reliable in rural areas. Immigration rarely asks, but having cash avoids problems.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Morocco requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. Renew your passport well in advance.
Keep a copy of your entry stamp
Take a photo of the entry stamp in your passport. If you lose your passport or need to prove your legal entry, this photo is invaluable. Also note the date stamped — it's your 90-day countdown.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Moroccan airport
At Casablanca, Marrakech, or other airports, follow signs to 'Passport Control' (Passeport). Join the queue for non-Moroccans. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry stamp.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually no customs declaration for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave Morocco before the 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a residence permit from the local police station before your 90 days expire — but this is rarely granted for tourism.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined around 300–600 MAD per day overstay, detained, and potentially banned from re-entering Morocco for a period. Always leave on time.
If you're transiting through a Moroccan airport and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you leave the airport, even for a few hours, you need to meet the visa-free entry requirements (passport validity, onward ticket).
Yes, Portuguese passport holders can cross the land borders from the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla into Morocco without a visa. The same 90-day visa-free rule applies. Expect longer queues and more thorough checks at land borders.
No, travel insurance is not a legal requirement for entry. However, it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in private clinics can be high, and public hospitals may require upfront payment. A good policy covers medical evacuation, which can cost thousands.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Moroccan immigration. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
No, there is no official requirement to show proof of funds for Portuguese passport holders. However, if immigration suspects you cannot support yourself, they may ask. Having a credit card or cash (around €50 per day) is sensible.
