Portuguese passport holders can enter North Macedonia without a visa for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since 2024 and applies to tourism, business, and short-term visits. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in North Macedonia. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months validity beyond your departure date — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from North Macedonia
Immigration officers at Skopje Airport regularly ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers sometimes ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officials may ask for proof you have enough money for your trip. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €50 per day of your stay.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you travel. Airlines may also refuse boarding if your passport doesn't meet this requirement.
Keep a copy of your documents
Take photos of your passport, return ticket, and accommodation booking. Store them in your phone and email a copy to yourself. If your passport is lost or stolen, this makes replacement much faster.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or save your return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Also arrange a local SIM or eSIM so you have data on arrival.
2
Arrive at Skopje or Ohrid airport
Most flights land at Skopje International Airport (SKP) or Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' — there are separate queues for EU/non-EU. Portuguese passports go through the non-EU line.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's the purpose of your visit?'. Answer briefly and honestly. They rarely ask for supporting documents, but have them ready.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before walking away — if the date is wrong, ask for a correction immediately.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 90-day visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a temporary residence permit from the Ministry of Interior in Skopje before your 90 days expire. This is a formal process and requires a valid reason (work, study, family reunion). Overstaying can result in fines and a ban.
If you're staying in a hotel, the hotel registers you automatically. If you're staying in a private residence (e.g., with friends or Airbnb), the host must register you with the local police within 24 hours of your arrival. If they don't, you could face a fine. Ask your host to confirm they've done it.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined (typically €50–€200), banned from re-entering for up to 1 year, or both. The fine is paid at the border or at a police station. Always leave before your stamp date.
Yes, all land borders are open for Portuguese passport holders. The same visa-free rules apply. At land crossings, you'll go through passport control in a booth or small office. Have your documents ready. Queues can be longer on weekends and holidays.
No, it's not legally required for entry. But it's strongly recommended. If you need medical care, public hospitals may ask for upfront payment. Private clinics can be expensive. A basic travel insurance policy covers this for a few euros per day.
The official currency is the Macedonian denar (MKD). Euros are not widely accepted except at some hotels and tourist shops. ATMs are common in cities. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, but cash is king in rural areas and markets.
No, Portuguese passport holders do not need a visa for airside transit (staying in the international transit area). If you need to enter the country (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), the standard 90-day visa-free rules apply.
