Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in the Netherlands. The 6-month validity rule does not apply for Schengen entry — just cover the dates you're there. Airlines sometimes enforce 6 months anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration at Schiphol and other Schengen entry points checks for a return or onward ticket. You need proof you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A flight to London, a train to Paris, or a bus to Brussels all count.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or an invitation letter from your host. Border officers at Amsterdam Schiphol sometimes ask for it, especially if you're staying longer than a week.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card ready showing you can cover your stay. The Netherlands doesn't publish a fixed daily amount, but €55–€60 per day is a safe benchmark. I've never been asked for it as a Portuguese passport holder, but it's good to have.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines and border officers check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close, renew before you book. You won't be allowed to board if it's under 6 months.
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90-day allowance covers all 27 Schengen countries combined. Use the EU's online calculator to track your days if you've visited other Schengen countries recently.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Gather your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups. Check your passport validity — 6 months from entry date.
2
Arrive at Schiphol or other Dutch airport
At passport control, join the queue for non-EU/non-Schengen travellers. Have your passport ready. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Present your documents if asked
Hand over your passport first. If asked, show your return ticket and accommodation booking. You don't need to volunteer extra documents unless requested.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp before walking away — it shows how long you're allowed to stay. If something looks wrong, ask politely.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare. You're free to enter the Netherlands.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen rule. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, count those days too.
No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism or business. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit before your 90 days expire.
Yes, you need proof you'll leave the Schengen area within 90 days. A flight to a non-Schengen country works. A flight to another Schengen country doesn't count as leaving.
You may be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. Some airlines are strict about this rule.
Tourist and business visits don't allow you to work for a Dutch employer. Remote work for a non-Dutch company is usually fine, but check with your employer and local tax rules.
For stays under 90 days, no registration is needed. If you stay longer, you must register at the local municipality (gemeente) within 5 days of arrival.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from the Schengen area, or deportation. The fine is typically €300–€500. Always track your days carefully.
