Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Portuguese passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Slovakia. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all 27 Schengen countries — not just Slovakia. Airlines check this at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Bratislava airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines flying into Slovakia are especially strict about this.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a friend in Slovakia covers this. I've seen them wave people through without it, but having it saves time.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Slovakia doesn't publish a fixed minimum, but officers expect to see enough cash or card balance for your stay — roughly €50–€100 per day. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit works fine.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Your 90-day stay counts across all 27 Schengen countries. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for Slovakia and any other Schengen country combined. Use the EU short-stay calculator to track your days.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Border officers will check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you travel. A passport with less than 6 months validity can result in denied boarding or entry.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months beyond entry), save a copy of your return ticket and first night's accommodation on your phone, and arrange travel insurance. No visa application is needed.
2
Arrive at a Slovak airport or land border
You'll enter through Bratislava Airport, Košice Airport, or one of the land border crossings from Austria, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, or Ukraine. EU citizens use the EU lane; Portuguese passport holders can use the EU/EEA/CH lane.
3
Present your passport at border control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about the purpose of your visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation proof.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp starts your 90-day Schengen stay clock. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when you leave.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then walk through the green 'nothing to declare' customs lane if you have no goods to declare. You're now in Slovakia.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen Area rule. The 90 days count across all Schengen countries combined, not just Slovakia. Use the EU's short-stay calculator to track your days.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, family visits, or short-term study. If you plan to work (paid or unpaid), you need a work permit and a national visa. Apply at the Slovak embassy in Portugal before you travel.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from the Schengen Area for up to 5 years, and deportation. The fine amount varies but can be several hundred euros. Always leave before your 90 days expire, or apply for an extension at the local police department for foreigners if you have a valid reason (e.g., medical emergency).
If you stay longer than 3 working days, your accommodation provider (hotel, hostel, or host) must register your stay with the Foreign Police within 3 working days. If you're staying in a private home, your host should do this. You don't need to do it yourself, but confirm with your host that they've handled it.
Extensions are not granted for tourism. You can only extend if you have a valid reason like medical treatment, force majeure, or humanitarian grounds. Apply at the Foreign Police department in Bratislava or your local district office before your 90 days expire. There is no fee for the application, but you'll need supporting documents.
You must carry your passport (or a certified copy) at all times. Police can ask for ID. A driver's license is not accepted as proof of identity. Keep your passport in a secure place, but have a photocopy or digital copy on your phone as backup.
As of 2026, there are no COVID-19 testing, vaccination, or quarantine requirements for entry. No health declaration forms are needed. However, check the Slovak Ministry of Health website or your airline for any last-minute changes before you fly.
