Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Tajikistan. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration at Dushanbe International Airport routinely asks for a confirmed onward ticket showing you leave within 30 days. Airlines also verify this before issuing a boarding pass.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Border officers may ask where you are staying. Have a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from a host ready. This is not always checked, but saves time if they ask.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Carry enough cash (USD or euros) or a bank statement showing you can support yourself during your stay. Tajikistan is a cash-heavy country — ATMs are unreliable outside Dushanbe.Recommended
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date, you will not be allowed to fly. Renew your passport first.
Keep digital copies of documents
Save screenshots of your passport info page, return ticket, and hotel booking on your phone. Tajik immigration may ask to see them, and having them offline helps if there's no signal.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for Tajik citizens and foreigners. Join the foreigner queue (usually shorter). Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your passport at immigration
Hand over your passport to the officer. They'll check your validity, scan your passport, and may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer calmly. They'll stamp you in with a 30-day visa-free entry.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim. Then proceed through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now officially in Tajikistan.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa at a Tajik embassy before travel, or leave and re-enter (though this may not reset the clock). Overstaying can result in fines and entry bans.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry by Tajik immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
For stays under 30 days, no registration is required. If you somehow get a longer visa, you must register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 3 days. But for visa-free visits, just enjoy your trip.
Yes, the visa-free policy applies at all official border crossings, including land borders with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Afghanistan. However, some remote crossings may have limited hours or require special permits (e.g., for the Pamir Highway). Stick to major crossings like Dushanbe or Khujand.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended. Medical evacuation from remote areas can cost thousands, and local hospitals may require upfront payment. Get a policy that covers Tajikistan.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined approximately 100-200 TJS (about €10-20) per day overstayed, and may face a ban from re-entering for up to 1 year. Avoid it by leaving on time.
No, the visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and transit only. For work or study, you need a proper visa and work/study permit obtained before travel.
