Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Zambia
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Zambia does not require six months of validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof of departure
Zambian immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight or bus ticket ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from your host with their address and phone number covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers occasionally ask for evidence of sufficient funds. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $500 USD for a short visit.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Zambian immigration will deny entry if your passport has less than 6 months of validity from your arrival date. Double-check before you fly.
No visa needed, but have documents ready
You don't need to apply for anything in advance, but keep your return ticket and accommodation booking easily accessible. Immigration may ask to see them.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (Lusaka) or Livingstone Airport
Most Portuguese travellers fly into Lusaka or Livingstone. Follow signs to 'Immigration' after baggage claim. Join the queue for foreign passports.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport (with at least one blank page), your return/onward ticket, and optionally your accommodation booking. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in.
3
Receive your entry stamp and 90-day stay
The officer will stamp your passport with a visitor entry permit valid for up to 90 days. Check the stamp says the correct date. You're free to enter.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Zambia and re-enter, or apply for a different visa category before your 90 days expire.
Zambia requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. Portugal is not a risk country, so you won't need it unless you've recently travelled to an endemic area. Check with your doctor.
You will be denied entry. Zambian immigration strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule. Renew your passport before travelling.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. Paid work or study requires a separate work or student visa obtained before travel.
No, departure tax is included in your airline ticket. You don't need to pay anything extra at the airport.
The same visa-free rules apply at all official land border crossings (e.g., Victoria Falls border with Zimbabwe). You'll still need a valid passport, blank page, and onward ticket.
The visa-free entry is single-entry. If you leave Zambia (e.g., to visit Zimbabwe or Botswana), you'll need to re-enter under a new visa-free grant, which resets your 90-day clock. Be aware of the total time spent in Zambia.
