No visa, no entry — no exceptions
Turkmenistan is one of the most restrictive countries in the world for visas. Russian citizens cannot get a visa on arrival or use an eVisa. If you show up without a visa, you'll be sent back immediately. Start the process at least a month before your planned travel.
Letter of invitation is the hard part
The LOI is the most time-consuming requirement. Your host in Turkmenistan must apply for it through the State Migration Service, and it can take 1–2 weeks to be approved. Don't book flights or hotels until you have the LOI in hand.
Registration is mandatory
Within 3 working days of arrival, you must be registered with the State Migration Service. Hotels usually do this automatically, but if you're staying privately, ensure your host handles it. You may be asked for proof of registration when you leave — failure to register can lead to fines.

What happens at the border

1
Get a letter of invitation
Contact your host in Turkmenistan (hotel, tour company, or business partner) and ask them to obtain an approved LOI from the State Migration Service. This can take a week or more, so start early.
2
Prepare your documents
Gather your passport (with 6+ months validity and a blank page), completed application form, two photos, and the LOI. Make copies of everything.
3
Submit your application at the embassy
Visit the Turkmen embassy in Moscow (or the consulate in your region) in person or via a representative. Submit your documents and pay the fee. Processing typically takes 10–15 working days, but can be longer.
4
Collect your visa
Once approved, you'll receive a visa sticker in your passport. Check the dates and details immediately. If anything is wrong, contact the embassy before you travel.
5
Arrive in Turkmenistan
At Ashgabat International Airport (or any land border), present your passport with the visa. Expect thorough questioning about your itinerary and purpose of visit. Keep your LOI with you — officials may ask to see it.
