Rwandan passport holders need a visa to enter Canada in 2026. You must apply for a visitor visa (TRV) before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or eTA option for Rwanda. Plan ahead: processing can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus

Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Canada. Airlines and border officers check this at check-in and arrival.Required
Visitor visa application
Apply before travel
Rwandan passport holders need a visitor visa to enter Canada. Apply online through the IRCC portal at least 4–6 weeks before your trip. The fee is CAD 100, and you'll need to submit biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre.Apply for visaRequired
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof that you'll leave Canada before your visa expires. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or onward ticket ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact info. Officers may ask where you're staying on arrival.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card statement showing enough funds for your stay. There's no fixed minimum, but CAD 1,000–2,000 per month is a safe range for a tourist visit.Recommended
Visa required — apply early
Canada does not offer visa on arrival or eTA for Rwandan passport holders. You must get a visitor visa before you fly. Processing can take 2–8 weeks, so start your application at least 3 months before your trip.
Biometrics appointment in Kigali
After submitting your online application, you'll likely need to visit the Canada Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Kigali to give fingerprints and a photo. Book your appointment as soon as you get the biometric instruction letter.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visitor visa online
Go to the official Canada visa website (IRCC). Create an account, fill out the application form, upload required documents (passport scan, photo, travel history, proof of funds, invitation letter if any), and pay the CAD 100 fee. Processing takes 2–8 weeks depending on your home country.
2
Wait for visa decision
You may be asked to give biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Kigali. Once approved, the visa is stamped in your passport. You'll receive a Port of Entry letter — print it and carry it with your passport.
3
Arrive at a Canadian airport
At the primary inspection kiosk (e.g., Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, Montreal), hand over your passport and visa. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, where you're staying, and when you plan to leave. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a visitor record showing your allowed stay (usually 6 months).
