Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for an Indian eVisa at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 days before departure. The fee ranges from $25 to $80 USD depending on the visa type (tourist, business, medical). Approval usually comes within 72 hours — print the approval email and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have at least 6 months validity
Your Rwandan passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from your date of arrival in India. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Indian airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight ticket or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Hotel bookings or a letter of invitation from your host in India can speed up the immigration process. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry evidence of sufficient funds for your stay — a bank statement or credit card showing at least $300–$500 USD equivalent. Immigration may ask if you look underfunded.Recommended
eVisa is electronic — no stamp needed
The eVisa is linked to your passport number. You don't need to visit an embassy or get a sticker. Just show your passport at immigration.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. Airlines check this before boarding — if it's close, renew first.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to indianvisaonline.gov.in, fill in the eVisa application form, upload a recent passport-style photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $25-100 depending on nationality and duration). You'll receive the eVisa by email within 3-5 business days.
2
Print or save eVisa
Print a copy of the eVisa approval email and also save a PDF on your phone. Immigration officers at Indian airports will check it electronically, but having a backup is smart.
3
Arrive at Indian airport
At immigration counters in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, or Kochi, present your passport and the eVisa. They'll scan your passport and stamp entry. Keep your return ticket and hotel booking handy in case asked.
4
Collect baggage and exit
After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel and proceed through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel.
