Rwandan passport holders need a visa to enter Vatican City. You must apply for a Schengen visa through Italy, as the Vatican has no independent visa system. Plan ahead — processing can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Visa required
You need a visa to enter Vatican City. Apply at the Apostolic Nunciature (Vatican embassy) in your country of residence — there is no online eVisa system. Processing takes 2–4 weeks. You must submit a valid passport, two passport photos, and a completed application form.Visa info & applicationRequired
Valid passport
Original passport required
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Vatican City. Vatican City does not enforce a 6-month validity rule — it just needs to cover your visit. Carry a photocopy of the bio page separately.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration at Vatican City's border (St. Peter's Square entrance) rarely asks for a return ticket, but your airline may check it at check-in. Have a printed or digital copy of your onward flight or train ticket out of Italy (Vatican City has no airport).Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Vatican City has very limited accommodation (mostly for clergy and official guests). Most visitors stay in Rome, Italy. If you have a hotel booking in Rome, carry the confirmation — it shows you have a place to stay nearby.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Vatican City does not formally require proof of funds, but Italian border police (who control access to Vatican City) may ask. Carry at least €50 per day in cash or a credit card. ATMs are scarce inside Vatican City.Recommended
Visa required — apply early
Rwandan passport holders must get a Schengen visa before travel. No visa-on-arrival or e-visa options exist. Apply at least 6 weeks ahead to avoid delays.
No separate Vatican visa system
Vatican City relies entirely on Italy's Schengen visa. Your visa application goes to the Italian embassy. The Vatican itself does not issue visas.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Italian embassy
Go to the Italian embassy in Kigali (or the nearest Schengen embassy if you're elsewhere). Submit your application, passport, photos, travel insurance, flight and hotel bookings, and proof of funds. Pay the fee (€80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free for under 6). Processing takes 15–30 days — apply at least 6 weeks before travel.
2
Wait for visa approval
The embassy will process your application and may call you for an interview. Once approved, they'll affix the visa sticker to your passport. Check the validity dates — they match your intended stay.
3
Travel to Italy and enter Vatican City
Fly into Rome (FCO or CIA). At Italian border control, show your passport with the Schengen visa. They may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. After clearing Italian immigration, you can walk into Vatican City — there's no separate border check. The Vatican is a 10-minute walk from Rome's Termini station.
4
Enjoy your stay and leave before visa expiry
Your Schengen visa allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Vatican City counts as part of Italy for this purpose. Don't overstay — fines and future visa bans apply.
