No visa, no entry — no exceptions
Turkmenistan is one of the most restrictive countries for visa entry. Without a pre-approved visa, you will be refused boarding and entry. There is no visa-on-arrival and no eVisa for Slovak citizens. Apply well in advance.
Letter of invitation is mandatory
You cannot apply for a visa without an approved LOI. Make sure your host in Turkmenistan starts the process early. A tourist LOI is usually arranged through a licensed tour operator — expect to pay for their services.
Register within 3 days of arrival
Even though the database doesn't list a separate arrival declaration, local registration is required. Your hotel or host must register you with the State Migration Service. Keep the registration document for your departure.

Obtain a letter of invitation
Contact a Turkmen tour agency or your business/relative in Turkmenistan to get an LOI approved by the State Migration Service. This can take 2–4 weeks. Without it, nothing else matters.

Submit your application at the embassy
Find the nearest Turkmen embassy or consulate (e.g., in Vienna, Berlin, or Moscow). Book an appointment if required. Bring your passport, photos, LOI, completed form, and fee. Submit in person or by post if the embassy allows.

Wait for processing
Processing typically takes 5–10 working days, but can stretch to 3 weeks. The embassy will contact you when the visa is ready. Check if they issue a paper visa or an electronic approval.

Collect your visa and check details
When you pick up your passport, verify the visa sticker: dates, name spelling, and validity. Any error means you'll need a correction before travel.

Arrive at the border
At Ashgabat International Airport or a land border, present your passport with the visa. Have your LOI and hotel booking ready. Border police may ask questions about your itinerary. Be prepared to show proof of onward travel.
