Visa on arrival
Apply at the border
Thai passport holders can get a visa on arrival at Maputo International Airport and other land borders. Have 30 USD in cash ready for the single-entry fee — the visa is valid for 30 days. You'll fill out a short form at the immigration counter and hand over your passport for processing.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Mozambique strictly enforces the 6-month validity rule — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding by the airline.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Maputo airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a bus/train ticket to a neighboring country ready. Airlines also check this before issuing your boarding pass.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
While not always checked, having a hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from a host speeds up the visa-on-arrival process. If you're staying with friends, ask them to write a simple letter with their address and phone number.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Officers may ask how you'll support yourself during your stay. Carry at least 500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing available funds. Credit cards are accepted in Maputo but cash is king in smaller towns.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash — US dollars or Mozambican metical. No credit cards, no mobile payments. Bring small bills ($5, $10, $20) to avoid change issues.
Visa is not extendable
The 30-day visa on arrival cannot be extended. If you overstay, you'll face fines and possible detention. Plan your exit date carefully.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At Maputo International Airport (MPM) or any other land border, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. Join the queue for foreign passports.
2
Submit documents and pay fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (usually given on the plane or at the border), and the visa fee in cash. The officer will process the visa sticker.
3
Receive visa and proceed
Once the visa is stamped, collect your passport and proceed to baggage claim or exit. The visa is typically valid for 30 days from the date of issue.
