Taiwan passport holders can enter mainland China visa-free for short visits. This policy is in effect as of 2026, but you must have a valid Taiwan Compatriot Permit (台胞證) or apply for a single-entry permit on arrival. Without it, you won't be allowed through immigration.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in China. Taiwan passport holders do not need 6 months of remaining validity beyond the departure date — just cover your stay. Airlines may still enforce 6 months, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from China
Immigration officers at major airports like Beijing Capital and Shanghai Pudong routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. Overstaying even by a day triggers fines and potential entry bans.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in China. Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A simple booking confirmation works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration rarely asks for proof of funds for short visits, but have a bank statement or credit card ready. No fixed amount is published — just enough to cover your stay without working. Cash or card is fine.Recommended
Taiwan Compatriot Permit is mandatory
Without a valid Taiwan Compatriot Permit (or a temporary permit issued on arrival), you will be denied entry. Airlines also check this before boarding. Don't assume you can get one at every port — only major airports and seaports offer the temporary permit service.
Register with police if staying privately
If you're staying with friends or family, you must register at the local police station within 24 hours. Hotels do this for you automatically. Skipping registration can result in a fine of up to CNY 2,000.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your Taiwan Compatriot Permit is valid. If you don't have one, confirm that your port of entry offers single-entry temporary permits. Print or screenshot your return ticket, hotel booking, and insurance policy.
2
At the airport check-in counter
Present your passport and Taiwan Compatriot Permit (or temporary permit application). The airline will verify your eligibility to enter China. They may ask for your return ticket.
3
Arrival at Chinese immigration
Join the 'Foreigners' or 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and Taiwan Compatriot Permit. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Keep your documents handy in case of random checks.

Frequently asked questions

No, you don't need a traditional visa. Instead, you need a valid Taiwan Compatriot Permit (台胞證). If you don't have one, you can apply for a single-entry temporary permit at certain airports and seaports. The temporary permit is valid for up to 90 days.
You can apply at overseas offices of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs or at designated entry points in China. The process takes about 7 working days if applied abroad. At the port, the temporary permit is issued on the spot but may take 30–60 minutes. Cost is around CNY 50–100.
The Taiwan Compatriot Permit allows stays up to 90 days. Extensions are possible at local Public Security Bureau (PSB) Exit-Entry Administration offices. You'll need a valid reason (e.g., medical treatment, family visit). Extension fees are around CNY 100–200 per application.
Overstaying can result in fines of CNY 500–2,000 per day, detention, and a ban on re-entry. Always check your exit date and apply for an extension before it expires.
If you're staying in a hotel, they handle registration automatically. If you're staying in a private residence, you must register at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival. Failure to do so can result in fines.
No, the permit is for tourism, business, or family visits only. To work legally, you need a separate work permit and residence permit. Working on a tourist permit is illegal and can lead to deportation.
Report the loss to the local police immediately and get a police report. Then go to the nearest PSB Exit-Entry Administration office to apply for a replacement. You'll need your passport, police report, and two passport photos. Processing takes 3–5 working days.
